Interview with Maria Natália João - Creative Tracks Ambassador

Maria Natália is a young Mozambican creative entrepreneur, student of Economics, writer, Master of ceremonies, communication adviser, TV panelist and member of various network in her country.
- Maria Natalia, you are a creative young entrepreneur and have participated in various networks and activities in Mozambique. Can you tell us how your activity as a creative entrepreneur began? How did you background / life influence you to begin with?
My entrepreneurial initiative as an entrepreneur started from childhood. I always had an inner strength that moved me to make things happen, that gave me this spirit, flexibility and dynamism to run after my ideals and achieve my goals, turning them into reality. Specifically, speaking of my company, MNJ Eventos & Serviços appeared in December 2016 at a very critical stage in my life. I was going through difficult times and my predisposition and persistence in wanting to overcome was the key to the emergence of it.
In search of the energies and strength to overcome the difficult moments, I created a list that showed my qualities and, along with my active and strong personality, I aligned the useful with the pleasant and decided to invest in the branch of Events as Master of Ceremonies, Event Manager and Communication Adviser, activities that I performed without too much effort (due to the innate eloquence) and also gave me space to continue with the studies without interruptions. I have been developing more my skills in this area (given that my background is in Economics), creating networks with the most experienced in the field, publicizing and expanding my circuit of work.
I already had the characteristics of an entrepreneur, but they were asleep. The difficulties I had to face at the end of 2016 were the springboard I needed to realize how much I was able to go beyond and assert myself as an entrepreneur. It is well known that personal growth and development, according to Freud, comes from some shock that we have had at some point in our lives. It is the great stirrings that lift us up, if we know (of course) to use them positively for the edification of our own being.
Besides having strong personality and natural characteristics for a potential entrepreneur (claw, strength, firmness, focus, determination, persistence, flexibility, creativity, among others), I was always observant and had as references some people that inspired me due to their life paths and way of conquering things.
Finally, I can say that the moment in which I really found myself and began to discover myself as a person, that is, the stage of self-knowledge in which I individually identified my strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities, limits and excesses, was what really moved me, and I used this moment opening my company and launching me to the world.

I am a defender of juvenile and child causes, as well as of gender equality in Mozambique.
I have a personal and special side towards children and like no one, I believe that this is the phase that a human being should have all kind of care, assistance and attention to the proper development and integrity, because they are the continuators of the nation and of the world. In addition, our love is extremely peculiar, because the fruit that will come from this special care is that it will dictate the course that the universe will take, through the construction and edification of the way of being and being, character and personality of each of them. Therefore, I have made offers annually at Christmas in orphanages of used clothing and footwear. I contact the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action in order to obtain the necessary authorization.
Being a defender of gender equality, I have a special look at the Women who do much to conquer their space, but unfortunately their cry is not heard in the face of a macho society, mainly the African. Over time, things tend to improve, because the imposition of the woman as a person with equal rights and duties is stronger, with the opportunity that she also has to go school, also contribute to domestic expenses and being self-sustaining.
I confess that this reality will persist for much longer (habits and customs are not immediately changeable), but I hope that in future generations the scenario will be completely different. What happens now is the omission of machismo. Men who see that they cannot refuse the power of influence that women naturally have, theoretically accept that they hold high positions in their jobs, but do not assume that the woman can also impose at home. For most (unfortunately), the woman is and will continue to be that delicate and malleable figure.
Having said this, and being a woman with much to give, I set myself in the position of defending and helping other women to self-assert themselves, awakening in them the awareness of their own value as women, and their abilities for a bright future .
This is the message I leave to all women, especially to Mozambican women: Although we are under an extremely strong cultural effect in our society, it is possible for us to self-affirm ourselves as worthy Women, worthy of respect and integrity.
In this sense, I have written and published on social networks for the benefit of children, women and welfare in Mozambique, urging the youth to adhere to entrepreneurship and raise the productive capacity of our country, which needs a lot:
I am part of Barack Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI-Network), She Leads Africa, Empowering Women and Enhancing Entrepreneurship. Allied to this, I am a Member Board of Directors at National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) and volunteer in organizations that deal with these issues: National Union of Students (UNE), St. John Mary Musey´s Nucleus (Church) and Graal -International Movement of Christian Women (Feminist Movement).

- Creative Tracks was in Maputo on 14 and 15 September to organize a two-day workshop on creativity and entrepreneurship, and we felt a lot of positive energy. In your opinion, how is the Mozambican landscape in creative entrepreneurship today (achievements and challenges)?

- Could you use some support in your business activities? If so, what kind of support would you need (courses, training, workshops, and financial support)?
Certainly, I have used support in my business activities; I have been trying to develop my skills for the best exercise of my functions in the various organizations that I am involved, such as:Online courses with certificates (promoted by the University of Virginia, YALI Network);
∙ Participation in lectures, conferences, seminars and workshops (one of them was the Creative Tracks in Maputo);
∙ Training at the level of the Executive Body of ANJE;
∙ Among others (moral support).
- As an ambassador, how do you plan to contribute and support the Creative Tracks community?
The Creative Tracks Community is a project that seeks to enhance international and intersectoral exchanges of experiences by improving the access of local culture professionals or creative professionals to networks around the world by allowing young creative entrepreneurs to share their ideas or projects and discuss their different needs. As Ambassador I wish to contribute as follows:
• Promote diverse events that enhance brainstorming, bringing a wealth of ideas, alternatives, and quick fixes.
• Create tools for a creative and competitive ecosystem with creativity and innovation as the raw material in the creation process for a knowledge-based productive chain capable of producing wealth, generating jobs and distributing income.
• Promote cultural diversity and human development through the interactions created in the Ideation Lab and create cycles of creation, production and distribution of goods and services that use creativity, culture and intellectual capital as primary inputs.
• To make an impact on our lives as consumers and citizens and to add value to our society in a sustainable way, ensuring inclusiveness and diversification.
I will be able to offer support as follows:
• Post news about local events, interesting articles on the reach of creative initiatives.
• Identify vocations and opportunities for local, regional development.
• Disseminate information about creative economics.
• Support greater circulation and distribution of creative goods and services.
• Bring more youth into the community and become more active on the platform, make new connections, and explore the benefits.
- Do you have new projects that you would like to share?
I have registered some projects and designed others. However, the publication and sharing will be soon. Meanwhile, I will develop and deepen existing ones and create greater expansion, networking and recognition in the market:
• CEO & Founder at MNJ Eventos & Serviços, E.I.;
• Member Board of Directors at National Association of Young Entrepreneurs;
• Capabilities and skills such as Young Creative Entrepreneur;
• Function exercise as Creative Tracks Ambassador.
Finally, I would like to leave this quote:
"Creativity is the ability to see relationships where none exists." (Thomas Dish)
